Baton Rouge General Arts in Medicine Program

One of only two in Louisiana, Baton Rouge General’s Arts in Medicine program uses evidence-based art and music activities as medicine to treat, heal, and inspire patients throughout the medical system. AIM originated as a BRG medical program in 2012, and has since helped over 115,000 patients, family members and hospital staff.

AIM works with all departments within Baton Rouge General to bring creative treatments to patients and families from across the region, especially patients experiencing depression or anxiety, and those who are not responding well to traditional medicine. Through its efforts and partnerships, AIM has improved outcomes for patients in the Regional Burn Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Cancer Center, and many other hospital units.

AIM has worked with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in the outpatient pulmonary rehab program since 2016. Music therapists teach patients to play the harmonica as a supplement to traditional lung strengthening exercises. With the goal of playing a song from start to finish, patients practice breathing deeply and exercise their lungs. These activities result in improved lung function and increased health outcomes for our patients.

Baton Rouge General's AIM program brings creativity into the treatment and healing process. Creating art increases focus, decreases the perception of pain, and provides a mental distraction. It also allows emotional expression, social connection, and support for everyone who participates. Through creative activities such as "live art" and mixed media works, the AIM program at Baton Rouge General allows the hospital to provide an extra level of care for patients, families, and hospital staff every day.

Music and art therapy programs within clinical settings are proven to decrease patients’ feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as improve patients’ outcomes and well being.

Baton Rouge General is seeing the benefits of AIM firsthand in their patients, family members, and staff. Through this collaboration, the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation enhances Baton Rouge General’s ability to provide therapeutic interventions for patients and care teams. It also enhances strategic partnerships and the innovative therapies that promote physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual health for patients and families served by the hospital. {Learn More}
